I had taken her there for a reason. The Four Seasons had an excellent menu; and because it was so large there was rarely a wait for a booth or table. Moreover, the high backs of the booths contributed to an aura of privacy, and the large bay windows provided and excellent view of the parking lot. Although the exits were far from ideal, I felt reasonably comfortable there.

We glanced at the menus and ordered; and after the waiter had left, I pulled the front page from the paper and handed Lea the rest. I was a news junkie; and as I sheepishly explained, I could not resist the international section. Unconcerned, Lea opened the style section and immersed herself in the world of fashion.

The waiter brought our food, and we ate and read in silence. When I finished a half hour or so later, I pushed my plate away and offered her the news section but she declined it. I found this disconcerting, for had there been any truth to her persona she would have seized it eagerly. And so I made the decision that I had contemplated for most of the afternoon. I would ask the Masters to investigate her; and if there were the slightest hint of compromise, I would end it.

I never suspected that they would lie to me.
